Chapter History
The Macomb Alumnae Chapter (MAC) of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated was chartered on Saturday, May 23, 2020, by 60 women who saw a need for service within Macomb County.
The MACnificent Macomb Alumnae Chapter is the 1,054 chapter of our sorority and is committed to continuing the legacy of our 22 Founders within our 12 designated service areas: Clinton Township, Eastpointe, Harrison Township, Macomb, Macomb Township, Mt. Clemens, Roseville, Shelby Township, St. Clair Shores, Sterling Heights, Warren, and Washington Township.
The chartering of MAC did not come without its challenges. There were several previous attempts, but the delay did not mean denial, and with each effort, a seed was planted. Due to those seeds being planted on good ground – the vision continued to grow.
In February 2019, Melodie Snipes put a call out to all sorors residing in Macomb County. This action resulted in a list of over 60 plus sorors responding to the request, including several sorors who participated in the previous attempts.
In September 2019, the chartering organizational efforts were led by Melodie Snipes and Janice Willis. Permission was granted for sorors to meet to develop short- and long-term goals as well as strategies for the chapter. Meetings were held on Sunday afternoons in the teachers’ lounge of Mt. Clemens High School in Mt.Clemens, MI. Sorors were excited and ready to get to work.
In December 2019, the application to charter the Macomb Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., in Clinton Township, MI was submitted for approval with 60 charter names to Midwest Regional Director, Dr. Sarahjini Nunn Spencer, National First Vice President, Cheryl A. Hickmon and National President and CEO, Beverly E. Smith.
In April 2020, during a global pandemic, we were notified of acceptance to become charter members of the Macomb Alumnae Chapter. Several required trainings took place during the month of May and the genesis of the MACnificent Macomb Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., chapter number 1054 came to be.
